Rivian R2 Starts Deliveries: What the Home-Charging Setup Actually Involves

Rivian began delivering the R2 compact SUV on June 9, 2026, making it the first production Rivian with a factory NACS port. The R2 carries an 87.9 kWh usable battery and an 11.5 kW onboard charger, filling from empty in about 8 hours on a 48-amp Level 2 circuit. Rivian says the R2 is designed to support V2H, but has not released a bidirectional home charger and has not given a timeline. Rivian began delivering the R2 on June 9, 2026. The compact SUV is the company's first vehicle with a factory NACS port, and the first delivered configuration is the R2 Performance with Launch Package, starting at $57,990, the most affordable Rivian yet. Lower-priced R2 variants are scheduled later. For anyone buying one now or waiting on a less expensive variant, here is what the home-charging setup actually looks like.

Battery and charge rate

The R2 has an 87.9 kWh usable battery, which is considerably smaller than the R1T's Large Pack (around 135 kWh) and close to the range of many mainstream EVs. The smaller battery is a meaningful difference at home: the R2's onboard charger runs at 11.5 kW (48 amps at 240 volts), the same rate as the standard onboard charger in Rivian's R1 lineup, so the R2 charges faster to full.

From empty, a 48-amp Level 2 session takes about 8 hours. In practice, most owners plug in at 30 to 50 percent and top off overnight, which is a 3 to 5 hour session at that rate. The R2 adds roughly 40 miles of range per hour on a 48-amp circuit.

The R2 Performance with Launch Package, the configuration currently being delivered, offers up to 330 miles of EPA-estimated range. Rivian's stated target for the RWD Long Range variant, planned for 2027, is around 345 miles, though that model has not yet reached EPA certification. Either handles typical daily driving and most weekend trips without mid-route anxiety.

What charger you need at home

The R2 has a native NACS port on the rear driver's side. For Level 2 home charging, that means two approaches work:

A 48-amp charger extracts the full benefit of the onboard charger. A 40-amp unit (9.6 kW) gets about 85 percent of the speed, which is fine for most daily routines. A 32-amp unit works for shorter commutes where a full overnight charge is more than enough regardless.

The R2 has a NACS port natively, so it connects directly to Tesla Superchargers without any adapter. To plug into the large base of J1772 home and workplace chargers, it uses a small J1772-to-NACS AC adapter. Rivian includes one in the box; it works reliably at full speed.

Panel and electrical requirements

A 48-amp Level 2 charger requires a 60-amp dedicated circuit. The NEC requires circuits carrying continuous loads to be sized at 125 percent of that load: 48 amps divided by 0.80 equals 60 amps. That means a 60-amp breaker, appropriate wiring, and a dedicated circuit to the charger location.

If your panel has space and remaining capacity, adding a 60-amp circuit is a routine job for a licensed electrician. If it does not, you are looking at either a panel upgrade or a load-management device that shares available capacity with other circuits. The V2H situation: hardware is in, charger is not

The R2 is designed to support vehicle-to-home (V2H) charging, which means it can send power from its battery back into your house, useful during a grid outage. Rivian says this capability is built into the R2's platform design. What does not exist yet is the bidirectional home charger that would connect the car to your home's electrical system to make V2H work. As of June 2026, Rivian has not announced a price, a product name, or a release date for that charger.

Rivian's stated intent is that R2 owners will be able to enable V2H without modifying the vehicle once the charger ships. But buying the R2 today on the strength of V2H means betting on an accessory with no confirmed timeline.

A note on the 30C tax credit

If you are buying an R2 now and plan to install a home charger, note that the federal 30C tax credit has ended. It covered up to 30 percent of installation costs, capped at $1,000 for residential property, but it ended June 30, 2026 and is no longer available for a new install. DC fast charging on the road

On DC fast charging, the R2 peaks at 210 kW on a 400-volt architecture and goes from 10 to 80 percent in about 29 minutes. The native NACS port means direct access to Tesla Superchargers without any adapter, which is the largest and most reliable public fast-charging network in the country. For older CCS stations, Rivian's Combo CCS1 DC Adapter handles the connection.

With up to 330 miles of EPA-estimated range, most road trips work comfortably with a single midday fast-charge stop.

Who this is for

The R2 is Rivian's first product under $60,000. For buyers who wanted an R1T or R1S but found the price out of reach, it is a genuine entry point into the brand at a smaller scale. The home-charging setup is straightforward: a 48-amp Level 2 unit, a 60-amp circuit, and no adapter needed at Superchargers.

J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience Public Charging Study, released August 12, found that IONNA (807 out of 1,000), Mercedes-Benz Charging Network (797), and Rivian Adventure Network (755) all scored higher than Tesla's Supercharger network (701) on customer satisfaction with DC fast charging, the first time Tesla has not led the ranking. For home-charging owners, the finding that matters most is the Level 2 one: the public plug getting worse is one more reason the box in your garage stays the more reliable option, while the DC fast picture is now genuinely more competitive for road trips.
